Need help with my Art homework?
I have to write an essay about Art Deco. So I need to have a brief explanation of what Art Deco is for my introduction.. I know that Art Deco affected architecture, Interior Design, Fashion, Graphic Arts and Films, but I’m not sure what it was influenced by, and what the intentions of it were etc.. I tried reading Wikipedia and things, but they really confused me, so could anybody give be a brief description of Art Deco that could help me write my introduction?
Also, I have to write about two of these designers, Coco Chanel, Madeleine Vionnet or Elsa Schiaperelli.. Which two would be best to write about?
Coco chanel is a legend you should definetly right about her. She is the founder of Chanel, ofcourse and is responsible for getting rid of the corsets and introducing the types of comfortable clothes we wear now a days. She is a legend, was very influential.
I know that Madeleine Vionnet, was known as the queen of the bias cut. I dont know how much you have studied fashion but a bias cut is very important to get the ‘flow’ in dresses.
The Art Deco style was influenced by a number of other art movements. Some art movements that had a major influence on Art Deco were:
Cubism – the reduction of natural forms to their geometrical equivalents
Expressionism – forms derived from nature are distorted or exaggerated and colors are intensified for emotive or expressive purposes
Futurism – forms derived chiefly from Cubism were used to represent rapid movements and dynamic motion; showing hostility to traditional forms of expression
Vorticism – using the concept of a vortex
Some other influences on Art Deco were the Russian Ballet, American Indian art, and ancient Egyptian art (Hillier 26-40).
